On May 31, 2020, I attended a peaceful protest downtown and documented what I saw. Later that night, riots broke out in downtown Birmingham, on the same streets that the peaceful protests had taken place on just hours beforehand.
The next day, I went downtown at sunrise to document the damage from the riots. Because it was so early, many businesses had not had the chance to board up windows or clean up the damage.
On June 2, I photographed another peaceful protest at Homewood Central Park.
Over the next week, many artists painted murals on the boarded up windows. On June 11, I photographed some of the finished murals and also some that were in the process of being created.
Regardless of where you stand in this situation, I believe these photos are extremely powerful. Enjoy
